On February 14th – 15th the OH Kappa chapter of Pi Beta Phi participated in the annual Cincinnati Dance Marathon benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This 24-hour dance marathon is a massive fundraiser on campus that brings the University of Cincinnati community together, both Greeks and non-Greeks. This year, CDM capped off an extremely successful Greek Week. Each event during the week was centered on raising awareness and fundraising for the event. In total, the 2015 CDM raised $74,392.08 for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital!
Here in Cincinnati, Children’s
Hospital has a large presence. Not only do families travel from all around the
world to receive treatment, UC student’s benefit from many experiential learning
opportunities. A number of Pi Phi’s
either volunteer, co-op, intern, or research at Children’s. OH Kappa Alum Alyssa Vah was a morale
co-captain alongside another Pi Phi during the 2014 CDM. She recalls, “CDM
was a way for me to help sick children, who don't have a lot of resources
besides their family to take care of them. Since I wasn't a nurse yet, it gave
me an opportunity to extend my hand to children in need even if I couldn't be
at their bedside.” Each hour during the
24-hour dance marathon is themed, and food is provided throughout the night for
participants. The most important and inspiring
part of the night are the testimonials patients of Cincinnati Children’s
Hospital give. They talk about what they
are fighting, their successes and what they have been able to overcome thanks
to Cincinnati Children’s. CDM is a
chance for patients to get out of the house, play some basketball, volleyball,
dance, and goof around with UC students that are there for one purpose – the
kids!
OH Kappa had a wonderful time dancing the
night away for a great cause and we can’t wait until next year! To learn more about the Cincinnati Dance
