Fraternity Day of Service is a day that is most important to all Pi Phi Chapters. The Ohio Kappa Chapter decided to celebrate this day by going to Barnes and Nobel in a local area to read Dr. Seuss books to children as they came and went for the evening. They also had the opportunity to create a voucher, which could be used to buy a book or order one online, and a portion of each book sold with the voucher would be donated to First Book. With such a large chapter there was a huge turn out of girls to read to children. About fifty girls were there!!

The kids loved that the Cat in the Hat was there as well. Of course they all wanted to be read to by him! Another fun activity the kids got to do was decorate bookplates that would be placed in books and donated.

To advertise for the event the members of Pi Phi handed out flyers to other student organizations and it was broadcasted on Kiss 107.1. The alumnae were also invited to partake in this wonderful service!

The Ohio Kappa of Pi Beta Phi wants to make this a tradition in the future. Headquarters was so proud of the chapter, as they sent a couple of emails saying that it was such an innovative idea, and especially great for such a new chapter!

Murder at the Pi Phi House!

What do you get when you put a bunch of sorority sisters in a basement for an evening a bonding? Why a murder of course! The Ohio Kappa Chapter of Pi Beta Phi decided to put together a murder mystery dinner theater for their sisterhood one Friday night.

Kenzie Austin, Pi Phi’s President, was unfortunately the one murdered when she was putting on a party for some of her fellow sisters. When the sheriff showed up everyone was questioned including attendees such as Brittany Spears, Helga, and the Mayor. Upon asking many questions to the guests at Kenzie’s party everyone guessed it was no one other than Helga. When she finally confessed, it was quite dramatic!

Great job on your acting skills ladies!! A fun time was had by all!!

Cincinnati Dance Marathon

The Ohio Kappa Chapter of Pi Beta Phi had so much fun participating in Cincinnati Dance Marathon this past weekend.

Here is Jordan Kravitz story:

At 12:38PM on Sunday February 27, 2011 I can honestly say I had never had been in so much pain in my life. However, every muscle ache I had was completely worth it. I had just spent the past 24 hours dancing, jumping, and yelling at the Cincinnati Dance Marathon (CDM).

The goal of CDM is to create and sustain special projects to provide emotional and financial support for patients and families treated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. This year over 600 students signed up to participate and as a whole 23,000 dollars was raised!!!

Pi Beta Phi teamed up with our homecoming partner Alpha Tau Omega to raise an outstanding 5,500 dollars. We also were the top fundraising team!

Throughout the 24 hours, we danced to hip-hop, classic rock, boy bands, and salsa. We had a "rave" with black lights and glow sticks and Skyline Chili showed up at 2:00AM to rejuvenate our mind, body, and stomachs. Student Representatives from Victoria’s Secret PINK and BCBG came and raffled away prizes. There was a limbo contest and a beach hour. There was also always basketball, volleyball, and video games to play!

However, I think the most important part of the night was when we took a break in dancing to hear from 18 families. These 18 families spoke of how Cincinnati Children's hospital had or currently was helping them and their children. It was amazing to see exactly whom the money we raised would help.

Overall, it was amazing experience. Even with sore feet, I positively can say, 100 percent I would do it again in a heartbeat.

The ladies of the Ohio Kappa chapter held a mother daughter brunch Sunday February 13th. The ladies of Ohio Kappa were able to get to know everyone’s mothers and the mothers got to know a little more about Pi Beta Phi.

Flag Football Intramurals

The Pi Beta Phi intramural flag football team is Intramural CHAMPIONS. Congratulations ladies! Intramural chair, Molly Igdaloff shared that she enjoyed organizing Pi Phis involvement in intramurals and valued everyone’s participation.

Derby Days

Pi Beta Phi participated in Sigma Chi’s Derby Days November 7^th – 11^th. Sigma Chi’s Derby Days consisted of a variety of events from trivia to relay races over a few days. All the money raised through these events went to the Huntsman cancer institute. Kenzie Austin, Vice President of Administration participated in penny wars, the skit competition, and dizzy bat. She said that her “Favorite parts of Derby Days were meeting all the Sigma Chis and making Pi Phi present in the Greek community". Kelsey McKay also participated in Derby Days by painting the banner, which was displayed for the duration of Derby Days outside the Pi Beta Phi house; she also competed in the trivia game.

Volunteering at the Krohn Conservatory

A group of sisters enjoyed their time at the Krohn Conservatory so much that they returned to volunteer with Kids Connection a program at the Krohn Conservatory. A group of about 30 fourth grade students from local Cincinnati public schools came to the Krohn Conservatory for a field trip. The Ohio Kappa ladies helped serve the students lunch, work on crafts and then joined them for the butterfly show.

Pi Beta Phi Celebrates 143 Years of Sisterhood

The women of Pi Beta Phi came together this spring to celebrate 143 years of national sisterhood, as well as their first year of sisterhood on the University of Cincinnati campus. While the rain poured and the humidity was high, the Pi Phi women voyaged to the Krohn Conservatory Butterfly Show in Mt. Adams for a Founders’ Day celebration.

The women were immersed into the Japanese culture, surrounded by Japanese-like gardens filled with hundreds of butterflies, beetles and crickets. Some of the women even joined in on an arts and crafts session to make Japanese lanterns. Upon entering the butterfly showroom, each member grabbed a flower and dipped it in sugar in anticipation that a butterfly would land on the sweet-scented bud.

Junior Alex Welch thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to bond with her Pi Phi sisters. “One of the most exciting parts of the whole experience was ‘catching’ a butterfly,” Welch said. “The most amazing idea about the whole process is that the butterfly kind of represented my sorority sisters and me. No matter where I am, there always seems to be a Pi Phi around, and we are drawn to each other like the butterfly was to the flower.”

Founder’s Day is an opportunity for members to celebrate the original 12 women from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, who initiated the first ever women’s fraternity.

"While founders day will forever be a special and momentous occasion, I think this first celebration will always be the most special,” President Sarah Gravely said. “Just as our 12 founders came together to form IC Sorosis 143 years ago, the 63 women in our chapter have done just the same in the past few quarters. Remembering the cultivation of our core values reminds us of their importance and motivates us to always work for their realization.”

Senior Spotlight: Maureen Murage

Maureen Murage is an international student from Kenya on a full ride to the University of Cincinnati and is a dedicated member of Ohio Kappa’s Charter class. Murage has been able to gain valuable leadership skills by joining Pi Phi and by becoming a member of the Leadership and Nominating Committee. Interactions with AAC have also given her the opportunity to network with other Pi Phi’s which will be helpful as she moves on to Cornell in the fall to earn her Masters in Engineering.

When asked about cultural differences in Kenya and the United States, Murage responded noting that Kenya possesses a very collective society. She reflects, “Everything you do is for the betterment of the society and not for the individual.” As leaders in Pi Beta Phi this should ring a bell, the collective society in Kenya is very similar to Servant Leadership that we all strive to give to our chapters. Murage’s ability to understand Servant Leadership is very apparent as seen through the success that she has brought our chapter through her hard work on LNC.
